As the Winemaker, you will be directly involved in and supervising the production of 18,000+ cases of our locally handcrafted and award-winning wines that our Adirondack community has grown to love. In addition, you would be the face of Wine Making at Adirondack Winery, sharing your knowledge with not only our staff, but occasionally with our customers as well via tours, talks, wine dinners, and video appearances!

Since 2008, Adirondack Winery has established two tasting rooms seeing over 70K visitors annually and ships to thousands of customers in 35 states. In addition, our wine can be found in 500 liquor stores and restaurants throughout New York! In addition, you would be our Cider Maker! In 2023, we launched Extreme Heights Cidery, crafting unique hard ciders from New York apples. This is a fledgling in-house brand we are working to grow to distribution.

In May 2022, we opened a multi-million dollar tasting room and winemaking headquarters in Queensbury; which has increased our production capacity to reach well beyond our current production levels; and has expanded our services to be a craft beverage destination with an excellent menu and a chock-full event calendar.

Overview:

This position oversees all winemaking operations from grape to bottle.

Essential Functions:

  • Sourcing, ordering, and storing of raw materials used in winemaking including grapes, ingredients, and bottling materials.
  • Manage, organize, and supervise crush pad operations.
  • Manage fermentations of wine and cider care for the wine and cider during fermentation, clarifying, and aging stages. Including wine transfers, laboratory analysis cold stabilization, and blending.
  • Manage filtering and bottling of wine.
  • Maintain cleanliness of facility, equipment, and working spaces.
  • Maintain records in accordance with Adirondack Winery requirements and applicable government requirements.
  • Manage wine and cider storage for maximum storage and safety.
  • Facilitate the testing of juice and wine and making necessary additions and/or corrections.
  • Conduct inventories of raw materials, supplies, and finished products.
  • Work with management and marketing on new and improved products.
  • Assist with management of our ornamental on-site vineyard and orchard.
  • Continued Education! Stay up-to-date on industry changes and trends and dedicate yourself to always learning and improving our wine and cider making processes.
  • Conduct Winery Tours and explain the wine making process to Employees and customers, conduct private tasting sessions with special guests, present at Wine Dinners or other events about the nuances of our wines and how they pair with food, etc.

Non-Essential Functions:

  • Assist with unloading delivery trucks when needed.
  • Conduct specialized tastings of wines periodically.
  • Order supplies for other departments as needed

Minimum/Essential Qualifications:

  • 2+ years’ experience in craft beverage making.
  • Familiarity with a lab environment.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds.
  • Mechanical aptitude for maintaining and repairing winery equipment.
  • Organizational skills.
  • Computer skills.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • 5+ years of commercial winemaking experience
  • Mechanical aptitude
  • Experience with carbonated products.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in enology, viticulture or related field preferred, but experience in lieu of will be accepted.

  • Schedule: Monday – Friday 9am-5pm with some long days, nights and weekends required September/October for harvest season.
  • Team Player – Understanding that Adirondack Winery is a small business and as such, all employees must be prepared to jump in as needed on a variety of tasks with the well-being of the company as the ultimate goal. At certain times of the year, this staffer may be called upon to pour wine at the tasting rooms, to represent Adirondack Winery at off-site events or work in other areas of the business to accommodate business needs.
  • Physical Demands – The ability to frequently lift, move and load cases of wine (approx. 35lbs), Must be able to remain in a stationary position for 50% of the time, sitting or standing for up to 8 hours per day. Constantly operate a computer and other office types of machinery such as calculator, copier, and printer.
  • Working conditions – This position requires modest outside work in warm and cold temperatures and in the elements, such as rain and snow. The winery can be warm in the summer and cool in the winter. Floors at times can be slippery and you must have a good ability to be able to walk/move safely. This is a manufacturing environment and as such, there is dangerous equipment and attention to safety is paramount.

Job Type: Full-time

Salary: $68,000.00 – $85,000.00 per year
